August 5, 1993 – The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which allows many workers to take time off for serious health conditions or to care for a family member, was signed into law. August 6, 2011 – Some 45,000 CWA and IBEW-represented workers at Verizon began what resulted in a two-week strike, refusing to accept more than 100 concession demands from the company. August 7, 1983 – Some 675,000 employees at AT&T represented by CWA strike over wages, job security, pension plan changes and health insurance. The strike was won after 22 days. August 15, 1989 – Two weeks into what became a four month strike by NYNEX workers in NY, Gerry Horgan, chief steward of CWA Local 1103 is struck and killed on the picket line by a scab worker. At his funeral, a line of thousands of CWA members wearing red stretched more than a mile long. Every Thursday, CWA members wear red in honor of Gerry’s memory.
